our latest photo shoot

our latest photo shoot

when you start a business, there are a lot of very un-glamorous things you can expect to do.
however, there are times when we look around and think, so THIS is why we are doing all of this!  i typically have this feeling when we go up to weston, ct to shoot at ryan scherb's home studio.
a few weeks ago we spent the day at ryan's shooting our latest and newest #dsgoods.  there is nothing more gratifying than seeing our new styles and fabrics being worn for the first time: it is the culmination of many months of design and fittings, fabric and color sourcing, and hard work.
below are some shots i took from behind the scenes while at the shoot.  our model was the beautiful and lovely emma ostilly, salon shahin provided hair and makeup, my mom and i styled the shoot, ryan was the photographer of course, and his trusted assistant norman was on hand helping with just about everything and also providing some laughs throughout the day.
the creative energy is always high at ryan's house, likely because of the serene and beautiful setting of his farm/ranch style home in weston.  the delicious nespresso coffee and good play list in the background might also help as well!  whatever it may be...the shoot got me so excited for our new things.
special note: we are going to start pre-selling our new styles in the next coming weeks.  be sure to sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know when they are on our site.

The other half of DS Goods

The other half of DS Goods

Many of you have heard a little bit about Lauren's sister, Kaki... the other half of DS Goods.  Aka the 'hidden gem'.  Because, well, to put it bluntly I am Kaki and a little self confidence never hurt anyone, right?  But in all seriousness, I am just the shy, nerdy one of the family that likes to sit behind the computer, not in front of it.
Lauren has her hands full these days, so after a long negotiation (I am getting a free donut!), I am stepping up to talk about how great DS is.  Sure, we are both a little biased, but come on!  Cozy fleece that you can throw on in the morning and wear all day?  And still feel pulled together by the end of it?  I'll take it.
I have 2 boys (ages 2.5 and 1), so in the mornings when getting ready I only have the amount of time it takes a toddler to unravel a roll of toilet paper. I usually throw on something DS because it is just so easy and I at least look like I put some thought into my outfit.  Yesterday happened to be my pink DS turtleneck in honor of the quickly approaching Valentine's Day and spring fever.  Then after wrestling my 2 year old to get him dressed, begging him to eat his lunch, and to play only ONE more game of red light, green light (ok fine, 2 more), I loaded both boys in the car to take JJ to school.  Then my youngest, James, and I headed to our Greenwich office to meet Lauren and put in some solid work hours before school pick up.
Yesterday was a day of planning for our future seasons (yay new styles and colors!), getting the office organized and of course packing some white boxes with neon green tissue paper and beautiful, soft fleece products to send out to our customers.
Once I was finished at Lauren's, it was back to get JJ at school pick-up, and upon getting home, another game of red light, green light, dinner, bath time and bed time.  Just like many moms, my days are chaotic and the best treat at the end of the day is to cozy up on the couch in my DS fleece with a glass of wine.  Last night, my husband came home from work and made a fire which capped off a hectic but fun day with the boys and my sister.
The beauty of it all is: I didn't have to change all day and still felt pulled together for the evening. Hence why this is the best Valentine's day gift (or treat for yourself)...you won't be disappointed.
Signing out,
DS Goods "Hidden Gem"

what they hygge?

what they hygge?

when my sister asked me recently if i knew what "hygge" was (pronounced HOO-gah), my response was an awkward giggle followed by a question..."no, should i?"
and her answer was, yes, you should.  hygge is the latest trend in self care by way of discovering true happiness through the every day things in life.  hygge is a danish word that means to create pleasure in the small things: whether that means an extra few minutes in a hot shower, making a steaming hot cup of tea, or putting on your favorite robe...enjoy the process, recognize the good moments, and relish in the joy that comes from these times.
so this week, i decided to practice my own version of hygge.  with a 9 month old baby, being 5 months pregnant, and in the midst of building and running a business, you can imagine that my 'hygge' hasn't been very high lately.  luckily my son decided to sleep in a little bit late the first morning, so i was able to lay in bed a few extra minutes (heavenly) and actually speak to my husband on the phone, who has been traveling all week for work.  yes, we actually spoke on the phone.  usually when he is gone we communicate via text so it was nice to actually hear his voice and talk about how excited we both are for the weekend.
instead of rushing through my morning routine like usual, i attempted to slow down and disconnect. i tried not to be glued to my phone and shifted my focus to sitting and playing with george after he had his morning bottle.  i made a cup of coffee and steamed some milk instead of just pouring it in cold.  and then as soon as george went down for his morning nap, i took a hot shower and lingered a bit longer than i usually do.
and of course, once deciding what to wear for the day, i went straight to my #dsgoods.  if there is any type of clothing that would go hand in hand with hygge, it is dudley stephens.  warm, comfortable, cozy...little does everyone know that today i'll actually be practicing hygge all day, simply wearing my cobble hill!
so, the outcome is: i'm into this hygge thing.  enjoying the small things in life and cozying up in our fleece seems like the way to live.

baby news

baby news

when we started the idea for dudley stephens my husband and i were in the midst of our two year struggle to get pregnant. at the time, i wasn't sure if and when it would ever happen for us and so the idea of starting my own business was appealing because it felt like i had nothing to lose.
flash forward to 2017...we now have an 8.5 month old son, george, and...(surprisingly) another baby on the way due this spring!  yes, you read that correctly.  by the time june rolls around and if all goes accordingly, we will have 2 babies under 2.  WISH US LUCK!
it has been awesome to wear our cobble hill turtleneck while pregnant, especially as the weather has gotten so much colder on the east coast.  a lot of our customers email regarding sizing and what #dsgoods are best to wear when pregnant.  i have been basically living in a size small cobble hill turtleneck in all colors up until now (20 weeks pregnant), which is the size i usually wear when not pregnant.  our things truly grow with your bump.  the fabric stretches and the styles are very forgiving, especially the turtleneck.  i do think i will have to get my hands on a few mediums though once i get a bigger.
and so - into 2017 we go!!!  we are so excited for everything we have planned for this year and hope you will follow along on our blog and our instagram page.  there is potential that 2017 will be quite interesting!
- lauren
p.s. i'm wearing our cobble hill turtleneck in pink which is back in stock now!

#dstrendsetters: nyc stylist kirstin gellatly

#dstrendsetters: nyc stylist kirstin gellatly

i first met kirstin through our amazing photographer, ryan scherb, when we launched dudley stephens in 2015.  you can immediately tell she is good at her job - she is professional, works quickly and efficiently, (crucial for a stylist!!), and most importantly, she's easy to get along with and fun.  she has a magnetic personality and is a team player on set - all things that we truly appreciate!  read below about her life in huntington, ny and how DS fits into her active lifestyle.

where do you live?

huntington, ny

what do you do?

Fashion Stylist based in NYC.  I am the worst at talking about myself. (which is why we love her!)  I love to garden, hike, go on adventures outside, go to the beach, and go paddle boarding with our dog.

necessary life extravagance:

Happiness, laughter, time with family and also time with friends because it is the family you get to pick. :o)  Being active in any way I can move my body… my favorite quote, “When we rest- we rust “ - Oscar de la Renta  .... I can’t sit still.

favorite place on earth:

My recent trip to Iceland made me realize how much I enjoy nature...so anywhere outside where nature surrounds me...sounding a bit like a dating website now!

favorite charity:

ASPCA and any cancer charity

favorite movie:

 "Legends of the Fall"

describe a typical day in your life:

Wake up, find my way to a cup of coffee, feed Dory and then take her for walk. I try to run, do yoga, or a fitness video in the morning or at night. Depending on my day I’m either running to catch a train to head to a job, or home filling the day with errands and projects around the house.

describe how dudley stephens might have played a role within this routine:

I have two amazing pieces in my DS collection and I plan on adding! The first thing I grab is my Ashford Poncho to toss on, when I am walking Dory or running errands now that the fall season is upon us! The other piece I have is my Cobble Hill Turtleneck, it served me well throughout the winter for my chilly outdoor life. It is perfect for many reasons, one being it has pockets and two it covers your bum!

I love that DS makes fleece clothing that doesn’t look like you are rock climbing! DS is a chic, classy alternative to warm activewear that doesn’t look like you are getting ready to pitch a tent!

#dstrendsetters: alston calabrese, san francisco resident and mother extraordinaire

alston wearing our palmetto poncho in natural blush with elizabeth.

i first met alston five years ago after meeting my husband - our husbands are best friends and "occasionally" play golf.  alston has a great sense of style - both during and immediately after her first pregnancy she always looked fabulous.   and her daugther elizabeth is no exception to this!  she has one of the cutest little-girl wardrobes i've seen.

alston, her husband, tony, and elizabeth relocated to san francisco last year, which was sad for both my husband and me.  however, the west coast is a great fit for this family of three (soon to be four this summer!).  whenever we get updates on their san francisco lifestyle it sounds quite nice.  between the weather, the people and the city - san francisco sounds like a pretty unique and awesome city to raise a family.  read more below about alston's enviable life in san francisco, the perfect place for #dsgoods!

where do you live?

We moved from NYC To San Francisco just over a year ago!  One of the best things about living here is the weather and being able to be outside most days - a must when you have a toddler!

what do you do?

I am a full time mom to Elizabeth (2) and pregnant with a baby boy due in August.  I also do marketing for EdwardnElizabeth, my mother's precious line of bibs and burp cloths made with Liberty of London and vintage Lily Pulitzer fabrics.

Necessary life extravagance:

Blowouts and babysitters!

Favorite place on earth:

The Hamptons - my husband and I met there, got married there, and love spending time there whenever we can!  It is our special place.

Favorite charity:

When I moved to San Francisco several women encouraged me to join Edgewood.  It is a wonderful charity that supports youth and their families with behavioral and mental health services.

Favorite movie:

Working Girl and Troop Beverly Hills - I am an 80's girl at heart!

Describe a typical day in your life:

My days start before the sun is up - my daughter Elizabeth is an early riser!  After a (big) coffee and homemade breakfast with my husband it is all about getting us ready and out the door for classes, the park or playdates!  We love being outside as much as possible with trips to the beach, hikes, or long walks.  Evenings are all about spending time as a family when my husband is home from work and post Elizabeth's bedtime I love cooking yummy dinners and having the chance to sit down with my husband and catch up on our days.  The only thing missing being pregnant is the big glass of wine!

how has dudley stephens played a role within this routine?

The weather in San Francisco can be all over the place, and Dudley Stephen is the PERFECT match for San Francisco weather!  Mornings and late afternoons are chilly here, with warmer temperatures in the middle of the day.  When moving here everyone said the key to dress in SF is layers, and they were right!  Fleece is the perfect functional fabric for the weather, but I love that I can still look chic when wearing my poncho or fleece, and don't just blend in with the sea of Patagonia's and workout gear.  Dudley Stephens gear has also been great during this pregnancy as it has been wearable with my growing bump and I know my poncho will also be perfect for nursing on the go!

#dstrendsetters: cassidy lange, hollywood film producer

cassidy wearing our cobble hill turtleneck in black.

cassidy knows hollywood.  after working in l.a. over ten years producing some big time movies (a few include "leap year" with amy adams and "the vow" with rachel mcadams and channing tatum...also, the upcoming "me before you" which i cannot wait to see) she has worked with and met just about everyone in hollywood.  over the course of our very long friendship it has always been fun to get updates from her and hear about her latest escapades on the west coast mingling with hollywood elite.

cassidy is also not your typical film producer: she is blonde, beautiful, easy-going, wicked smart.  she has a bohemian, southern californian sense of style and warm demeanor that i would imagine set her apart from her peers in a very good way.  cass also happens to be one of my favorite dining partners due to her love of food and most notably, desserts!  we've spent many nights over delicious dinners catching up, whether in l.a. or n.y., having engaging conversations about life.

read below for more - and also make sure you see her movie ME BEFORE YOU!

where do you live?

I live in Venice Beach, C.A.

what do you do?

I am a studio executive at MGM.  I oversee the development and production of films.  My next film, ME BEFORE YOU, based on the best-selling novel, stars Emilia Clarke and comes out June 3rd.  Go see it!

 necessary life extravagance:

My guilty pleasure has always been sweets - chocolate, ice cream, baked goods, anything that contains sugar, really.  Which I guess means we can also throw wine in there.  Wine is pretty necessary, I'd say.  Here's me outside of our local ice cream shop, The Salt & The Straw.  It's a must visit if you're ever in L.A. (or Portland).

cassidy wearing our cobble hill turtleneck in white.

favorite place(s) on earth:

Beverly Hills Cheese Shop, The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, The Long Beach Flea Market(pictured below!), and my backyard on Sunday morning.

favorite charity:

HYPE (Helping Young People Excel) provides talented low-income students in Los Angeles with guidance and resources to qualify for admission to elite college-prep independent high schools.  There is so much wealth in L.A. but still an incredible amount of poverty.  So many kids stare at the window display of prosperity and success without ever gaining access to any of it.  HYPE does a great and meaningful job of combatting this, in addition to many other organizations like Communities in Schools, the Boys and Girls Club, and even our local L.A. Park, Recreation, and Community Centers.

favorite movie:

This is a tough one since my job is being a fan of movies - I have so many.  In the interest of adding something new I'll say THE SOURCE FAMILY.  It's a beguiling documentary about a cult that sprang out of L.A.'s first health food restaurant in the 70's.  It feels like a spiritual predecessor to an Edward Sharpe music video and part of me wishes I could have joined the cult.  Or at least look like the women in it.

describe a typical day in your life whether at work or at home:

My sacred Sunday morning routine now wouldn't be complete without a Dudley Stephens Cobble Hill Turtleneck.  It's generally too hot during the day in L.A. to wear fleece, but my DS goods are cozy saviors in the early morning and evening hours.  Every Sunday, as early as my hangover allows, my pup Wesley and I walk down to Abbot Kinney to Blue Star Donuts to pay hipster prices for admittedly delicious donuts.  This is also the time when I usually call Dudley (Lauren of Dudley Stephens) to catch up cross-country.  Wes and I bring the donuts back, wake Peter up, and read the NY Times in the backyard with our donuts and coffee.  I look forward to it all week.

cassidy in her cobble hill turtleneck in white with wesley.

I'd like to thank Dudley Stephens for making me chic in moments when I used to be a "What Not To Wear" episode.  I love yoga but I am not one of those girls who owns a million matching Lululemon get-ups.  Yoga outfit = whatever ancient comfy cotton combo I can throw together in preparation to sweat entirely through.  But now, I put on my Cobble Hill and instantly it's as if I've pulled together an outfit for public consumption.  This also goes for airplane travel.  I travel a lot for work and because I value curling up and sleeping on flights above all else, I am never dressed particularly well.  I'm usually worried someone is going to drag me out of Business Class for being an imposter.  No longer - thanks to my sleek Cobble Hill.

#dstrendsetter lee halloran: google rockstar and mom of two

lee wearing our pacific vest in heather grey with son charlie.

lee and i go way back.  way back to freshmen year of college at duke.  lee is one of those people who just gets it: from the moment you meet her, you would know what i mean.  her sense of humor, her positive outlook on life, her amazing family and friends...she is someone that you can always call to get down and dirty advice.  she tells it like it is, something that is one of the best qualities to have in a friend.

post college, we spent our 20's living in new york city where we trained for the new york marathon together, ran it (she much faster than me!) and also spent a lot of time brunching.  and then she moved to san francisco when she landed an awesome job at google.  even though our new york friends and i were extremely sad to see her go, she wound up meeting her lovely husband david there and then went on to have their two beautiful boys - james and charlie.  after all of these years and fun memories to look back on, i am so excited to feature a little bit about her life, her job, and her family on our blog.

where do you live?

Concord, MA, right outside of Boston.

what do you do?

I work at Google in Cambridge.  I focus on YouTube specifically and spend my time developing revenue and brand building opportunities for our top content creators.

necessary life extravagance:

Not much extravagance these days, at least not in the typical sense.  I would say my daily "must-have" is a combination of my boys James (3) and Charlie (1), my husband David and plenty of Chard.

favorite place on earth:

Cavallo Point.  A lodge at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge where I've spent spent many of my best days with my husband David.  We fell in love there, got engaged there and got married there.  It's beautiful, cozy and surrounded by some of the most amazing food and outdoor activities that Marin has to offer.

favorite charities:

Pediatric Cancer Foundation and Lead the Way.

favorite movie:

Steel Magnolias.

describe a typical day in your life:

I wake up around 5:30/6am with my early bird James.  We eat peanut butter ball cereal and watch Blaze and the Monster Machines and snuggle until David and Charlie get up.  We play trucks, eat breakfast, and then I take approximately 5-10 minutes to get ready (this is where DS comes in).  I literally have no time in the morning to make any sort of effort in my appearance so being able to throw on something cozy and comfy that is still stylish and makes me look like I'm trying is key :) I usually rush off to work and return home in the early evening for more trucks, snuggles, dinner, bath and bedtime with the boys (and wine...).

One thing that I miss is having time to work out like I used to.  Or if I do, it's just that I can't (or won't) prioritize it.  As someone who used to be religious about running and extremely critical of my own body, this is a change.  Despite this change and challenge, I think it's also one of the greatest gifts.  I no longer look at myself in the mirror the way I once did and I feel so happy in my own skin despite it being a little different than it was before.  I love that Dudley Stephens products are focused on making women feel good being cozy and giving them confidence in comfort.

lee with charlie - look at that smile!!

#dstrendsetters: davina mazaroli from anheuser-busch inbev

davina wearing our court modern top in white.

i met davina last summer through a mutual friend when she came out to connecticut for the day from new york city with said friend (thank you bins) and we spent the day doing what we did a lot of last summer....playing badminton in the yard, eating lobster rolls, relaxing on the dock in rowayton, ct, and going for a long boat ride in the late afternoon.

davina is a true #DStrendsetter - smart, sophisticated, gorgeous and hard-working, holding a powerhouse job at anheuser-busch inbev.  coming from a marketing focused family, i immediately appreciated hearing about her position there, along with hearing about (and dreaming of) her summers spent in greece as a child...a place she still visits every summer.

read below for a little bit on her life and how dudley stephens has impacted this international traveler.

where do you live?

Tribeca, N.Y.C.

what do you do?

I am the Global Director of Talent and Leadership Development for Anheuser-Busch InBev.  The focus of my job is to set the global human capital strategy to match the company's business strategy.  I work with the c-suite (CEO, COO, etc) to make sure they are indentifying and grooming their successors.  It is kind of like talent scouting and watching young baseball players...I am constantly tracking and measuring employees so that we're sure we are placing the best players in our 'major league' positions.

necessary life extravagance:

Perfume.  I am a perfume junkie.  I don't have one scent - I typically switch between fragrances 2-4 times per year.  I'll never throw a bottle away, each bottle reminds me of a certain time of my life.  My current favorites are L'Etat D'orange, Acqua di Parma, Clive Christian and Creed.

favorite place on earth:

Greece.  There's one island in the Cyclades where I've spent every summer since I was five years old.  My mother is Greek so I spent a good portion of my life there with my grandmother and cousins.  Summer is not complete without a visit.  It is the most gorgeous, simple, relaxed island and I am keeping it a secret.

place i most recently traveled:

Traveled to LA for work, one of our key US sales regions.  Before that I was in Belgium...the home of Stella Artois.  Belgium may not be the sunniest place on earth but I always stock up on Belgian chocolate and stop by Paris for a quick weekend shopping trip.

favorite charity:

OxFam America - an organization tackling poverty.  They have an amazing program where you can donate money to small businesses or buy livestock so that communities and families can sustain themselves through farming and entrepreneurship.  So at Christmas time, most of my friends and family receive cards saying I've bought a herd of goats or chickens on their behalf.

favorite movie:

My friends always make fun of me for not having seen any movies.  But my favorite movie, since childhood is The Red Balloon.

describe a typical day in your life:

There is no typical day since I travel a lot for work.  But if I am in New York City, I try to wake up early and squeeze in a hot yoga class at Lyon's Den before I head to work.  Then I head straight to work, matcha in hand.  I'm usually at work until late (8 or 9pm) and then will go straight to drinks with friends or dinner (current favorite, Kiki's in Chinatown).

describe how dudley stephens might have impacted this routine:

Once I leave my apartment in the morning, I'm usually gone for 12-15 hours, so comfort is key; which is why I love Dudley Stephens.  I won't look wrinkled or messy at the end of the day and I'll be comfortable running around the city.  Staying organized is always a challenge for me.  My job keeps me really busy and bouncing around.  So by the time I've unpacked a suitcase, it's time to pack a new one.  Having cute clothes that are comfortable and warm for travel in different climates that do not require dry cleaning is a huge help.

#dstrendsetters: ioana brooks from kk travels worldwide

ioana sharing a sweet moment with her son, alex, while wearing our court modern top in periwinkle.

ioana brooks, a great friend from college, a traveler, an adventurer, a mom...has been a huge supporter of dudley stephens since we launched last october.  despite the warm climate of her home in san diego, she travels a ton and has found use for her #dsgoods through her travels and the occasional chilly day in san diego.

below ioana answers a few questions about her beautiful and inspiring family history, her current routine in san diego with her family (husband luke and children scarlett and alex), and her position with kk travels worldwide.

where do you live?

San Diego, California.

what do you do?

I am a travel consultant at KK Travels Worldwide and mom of two.

 necessary life extravagance:

Friday night babysitter.

favorite place on earth:

Healdsburg, California, where I got married.

favorite charity:

charity: water.

favorite movie:

I am known for my poor taste in movies...but I love St. Elmo's Fire, and I don't think I can get criticized for this one.

your family history is so interesting, tell me about it:

My family came to the United States from Romania in the early 1980s.  At the time, Romania was under a communist regime, and my family left to escape the regime.  Growing up, I did not understand the sacrifice my parents made, by leaving family, friends, and their home behind and taking a huge leap into the unknown.  I was fortunate to spend summers in Romania with my grandparents, so while we lived far apart, we were still very close.  As I got older, and especially since I started my own family, I am beginning to appreciate the magnitude of my parents' decision to leave Romania.

you took your kids over to romania recently, how was it traveling with them?

I took my kids to Romania about one year ago and we are going again in May.  My grandparents feel too old to travel and this was the first time they met my children.  Traveling with young kids such a long distance had its challenges, but it was worth it to see how ecstatic my grandparents were to meet their great-grandchildren.  The flights were surprisingly smooth, and the biggest challenge was the jet lag.  My then 2.5 and 1 year olds were ready to play at 3am for a few nights.  However, I am not discouraged and look forward to our upcoming visit to Romania.  Although my kids likely will not remember these visits, for me the memories are priceless.

tell us about your travels post college:

After college, I took advantage of any travel opportunity.  Some highlights include visiting friends in Costa Rica, London and Dublin, but my most memorable adventure has to be the three months I spent traveling around the world after law school.  I started in San Francisco, headed west, first stopping in Tokyo, continuing west through Asia and Europe, and returning to San Francisco.  While I had travel partners along the way, I traveled solo for parts of the trip.  Solo travel allows me to soak in a destination and create my itinerary without any compromise.

describe a typical day in your life now:

During the week, I have breakfast with my family and scramble to get everyone fed and dressed before school or work.  This morning, when I put on my Dudley Stephens Smith Jacket, my daughter said, "Mom, I love that jacket", although her favorite is the Court Modern Top in pink - her favorite color.  If my kids are both in school, I go to Orange Theory, my current obsession, and then I work in the afternoon.  Often before I know it, I am back at school picking them up.  We come home, have dinner, bath and bedtime.

describe how dudley stephens might have played a roll in this routine:

I love all of my Dudley Stephens pieces because they fit well, are so comfortable and are easy to wash.  With two young kids, I inevitably end up with sand, ketchup, paint or a number of other smudges on my clothing almost daily.  In a well tailored Dudley Stephens top, I can look cute all day and escape my usual t-shirt and yoga pants mom uniform, without worrying too much about ruining my clothing.  I travel quite a bit, both for work and visits to my family and friends.  What to wear on the plane is always a big question.  I have found that Dudley Stephens is the perfect solution!  I am comfortable for a long flight without sacrificing style.

and tell us about KK travels worldwide, what makes KKTW different?

I joined KK Travels Worldwide just under 1 year ago. As long as I can remember, I wanted to work in the travel industry.  I took a detour to go law school and practice law for a number of years.  Now, I am so fortunate to work in an industry that I love with an incredible team at KKTWW.

KKTWW is a unique full-service travel advisory firm, with an innovative and collaborative approach that sets us apart in the industry.  Our team has first-hand experience in over 80 countries, and we are proud to be named as Travel + Leisure's go-to wedding and honeymoon specialists.  We work together and share our expertise and experiences to create customized itineraries that reflect each client's travel style.
