The Fit Guide

We always say: If the fleece fits, you’ll want to wear it (again and again). That’s why our focus on fit is kind of an obsession around here. We want every woman, of every size and shape, to find her perfect fit in a Dudley Stephens fleece (or two...or more!). Here, Dudley devotees talk details when it comes to sizing in our styles.

How do you Dudley? I am in my Dudleys 3 out of 4 seasons: to work 5 days a week (with my cardigan readily available during the summer), to the park, soccer practice and playdates, and out with friends for dinner and drinks. I once ran a Spartan race at Fenway Park in my Navy Park Slope! My all-time favorite moment in my Dudley (Terry Boatneck Ice Blue) was with Rep. Ayanna Pressley as I waited to present to the Boston Employment Commission at Boston City Hall. I wear Dudleys so often that my peers have called me Dudley (and I will answer to it)!

Favorite DS colors: Red, Black, Island Coral

What’s your desert island Dudley? My Heather Grey Park Slope in Terry Fleece.

What size do you wear in DS?

Park Slope XS for the perfect put-together look with dress pants or jeans.

Cobble Hill -S with the length hemmed up to the pocket line.

Greenpoint - S, perfect with no hemming necessary.

Brighton Boatneck - XS as a single layer, S when layering.

How does DS sizing run for you? The Park Slope runs large for me, so I get one size down, and the hem line is perfect at my hip. For extra room in Park Slope I have purchased S during the winter seasons for a little extra length layered over heat gear during ski season. For me, the Cobble Hill is true to size, once hemmed for length. In the Greenpoint Vello, I wear a S; since the Vello material is thicker, the S will allow for layering. With the thinner Terry Greenpoint, an XS is a streamlined fit that still lets me layer.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? Mostly skinny jeans. The Greenpoint is perfect with denim and leggings, and can be dressed up and down. It will be my go-to for the slopes in the winter!

I love wearing my Brighton Boatneck over a collared shirt or thrown over a t-shirt or a dress for cooler spring/summer temps. I also wear it to work paired with dress pants, a pencil skirt or denim.

Any other DS fit tips? For someone with my body type, the Park Slope and Brighton Boatneck in XS offer a fitted and clean look; the S lends extra room over a tank top, t-shirts or a button down. In the Cobble Hill a S, hemmed 1-1.5” (at pocket line), provides the perfect rear coverage, and the Greenpoint is the perfect in-between, with enough rear coverage for when I want a longer length without hemming.

How do you Dudley? I work from home full-time and always get chilly while sitting at my desk. I live in my Park Slope and Cobble Hill turtlenecks with leggings when I'm working alone. And in the summer I keep a Bedford Blanket Scarf on my chair for when the AC kicks up. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I wear my DS fleeces more than anything else in my closet. I basically live in them for everything from errand-running to school pick-up to work.

Favorite DS colors: I helped to launch the Ice Blue when it first came out, so that will always hold a special place in my heart. My other favorites are Natural Blush and Camel. And you can't go wrong with Black or Navy! When people ask me which one to buy if they're only getting one, I always recommend those, because they can go with anything.

What’s your desert island Dudley? The Cobble Hill in Navy Terry Fleece.

What size do you wear in DS?

Cobble Hill - XS, because I like it to look like more of a slim fit.

Everything else - S

How does DS sizing run for you? The Park Slope fleece runs short, so if you have a long torso, keep that in mind. And I've found in the Vello fleece products, the sleeves are tighter because the fabric is thicker.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? I wear my Cobble Hills with leggings and Park Slopes with jeans and skirts (here are some of my favorite ways to style it).

Any other DS fit tips? Keep in mind that when you're wearing fleece it's bulkier than cotton or other thinner fabrics, so it will look bulky if you size up.

How do you Dudley? Everywhere! I wear them from work to weekend lounging.

Favorite DS colors: Navy, Off-White, Camel & Ice Blue

What’s your desert island Dudley? That's a tough one. I’d say it’s a tie between my Park Slope turtlenecks in Navy and Off White.

What size do you wear in DS? A small for a tailored but comfy fit is perfect.

How does DS sizing run for you? I think all run true-to-size, so I think it’s more about your own shape and the length of the DS style. For example my hips are bigger than my top so I can size up in the Cobble Hill for a not-so-clingy fit. I also find the Terry Fleece feels a bit looser because the fabric isn’t so thick, which makes for easier layering.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? The best part of styling DS is the versatility of the cut. It’s a fabric you usually only see in casual wear but the cut elevates it to dress up or down—and be comfy no matter what.

Any other DS fit tips? I like to wash them inside out and air dry (they dry super fast) to preserve the great fit. I have super long arms and the sleeves are just long enough—so I can’t afford any shrinkage.

How do you Dudley? I don’t limit it to a particular occasion—I wear my #dsgoods from walking the dog to attending a dinner party! It just depends if I am going casual or dressy. I always feel my best when I don my Dudleys. I feel polished and put-together.

Favorite DS colors: Off White, Navy, White, Black and Steel Grey

What’s your desert island Dudley? Navy Park Slope

What size do you wear in DS? I wear a M in tops. The Greenpoint sizing runs the same as their other turtlenecks. On the other hand, I find the Jay Joggers run slightly large and wear a size small.

How does DS sizing run for you? I believe all of the tops run pretty true to size; I wear the same DS size, my larger normal size, across the board.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? I like to have the option to tuck in as well as to layer them with button-downs. I love pairing my Park Slopes with the Jay Joggers or jeans (white and dark). When I want to wear leggings I will wear my Cobble Hill or my Prospect Pullover. I love my Prospect Pullover for my hospital call days. It is easy to throw on and take off when I have an imminent delivery.

Any other DS fit tips? I highly recommend if you are broader on top to go up one size, especially if you want to layer.

How do you Dudley? At home! My Dudley Stephens tops are my favorite cozy tops for working from home.

Favorite DS colors: Off White and Navy

What’s your desert island Dudley? The Park Slope!

What size do you wear in DS? I size up in DS to a Large given my larger chest.

How does DS sizing run for you? I'm grateful the Large size fits across the board for me in the styles I own.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? I love styling the Park Slope with comfy leggings. It's my ideal WFH outfit in cooler months! And I love the Brighton Boatneck in Navy with denim shorts and white jeans.

Any other DS fit tips? Size up for a roomier, comfier fit or if you have a bigger bust!

How do you Dudley? How don’t I!? I find every opportunity to dress a Dudley up or down! My office is business casual, so I love being able to layer the Park Slope over a dress for a look that is both comfy and put together. Another one of my favorite ways to Dudley is to pair one (any style works!) with leggings to run errands or lounge around my home. It looks chicer than throwing on a hoodie—with all the comfort of one!

Favorite DS colors: My favorite is the Pink, hands down (pink is my neutral), but I also like the classic look of the Navy.

What’s your desert island Dudley? If you asked me a few months ago, I would say Park Slope without hesitation. I could never part with my pink Park Slope—I love that I can snuggle into the turtleneck and that the brightness of the color is usually a great contrast on grey, chilly days. However, now that I have tried the Greenpoint, I may have to switch teams. It really is the perfect length and the band-free hem makes it even better for tucking into skirts!

What size do you wear in DS? I wear an XL, which helps provide a polished look that is fitted, but not tight! I still have the option to tuck in or layer over dresses with ease.

How does DS sizing run for you? The Park Slope is true to size! I have broader shoulders and a larger bust so it is a little more fitted in those areas. If you are looking for a more relaxed fit, then I would recommend sizing up.

When it comes to the Cobble Hill, I have to admit that as a curvier woman, I was initially worried about a style that falls below the hips. I was pleasantly surprised to know that it fits my hips just fine! It is also the perfect legging length in that it covers my bottom. I have broader shoulders and a larger bust so it is a little more fitted in those areas. If you are looking for a more relaxed fit, then I would recommend sizing up. Otherwise, I would call this style true to size!

Also true to size, the Greenpoint is definitely a great length for anyone that is worried about whether the Park Slope will be too short. As someone with a larger bust, I find my true Dudley size of XL to be loose enough to be super comfortable but also fitted enough to look chic. If you also find that your tops tend to fit tight in the chest or shoulders, I don't think that you will regret sizing up for a more cozy fit.

The Brighton Boatneck is also true to size, a very similar fit to the Cobble Hill with the comfort of an open neck. I think my regular size is perfect, but if you have broader shoulders and a larger bust then you might want to size up for a looser fit.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? I love the Park Slope layered over a dress or tucked into a skirt! For a fun, mixed-fabric look, tuck your Park Slope into a leather skirt.

I wear my Cobble Hill over leggings with Bean Boots, and the Brighton Boatneck pairs well with shorts or tucked into a skirt.

While I rarely wear jeans, one of my first thoughts when trying on the Greenpoint was that it would look great with a pair of pants! This style is also a great candidate for tucking and cozy days with leggings.

Any other DS fit tips? I find that Dudley is pretty true-to-size, but when in doubt, size up. You won’t regret a cozier fit, especially since you will be living in your Dudley as soon as it arrives.

It’s also important to note that I have a pretty average torso length, which helps the Park Slope and Brighton Boatneck end at what I think is the perfect location. Quick style tip: Your Dudley is more versatile than you may think. Don’t be afraid to experiment! One of my favorite looks was monochromatic, with my pink Park Slope tucked into a midi-pleated skirt!

How do you Dudley? Where don’t I Dudley?! I love to wear my Dudleys while we are by the water in Bay Head—they are perfect for that Summer breeze! No matter what we end up doing, they are the perfect layer.

Favorite DS colors: Camel, Navy and Natural Blush! I have the Brighton Boatneck, Park Slope and Cobble Hill in these colors and reach for them time and time again.

What’s your desert island Dudley? The Cobble Hill! I love it so much, plus it has pockets which is a major win. The Greenpoint is my new favorite, the perfect in-between to the Park Slope and Cobble Hill, hitting at the perfect spot.

What size do you wear in DS? I am an XXL in all my Dudleys! I find that this size works well with my body and larger chest. When it comes to fit, I find the Park Slope and Cobble Hill Styles to have a looser fit, and Brighton Boatneck is a slimmer, more feminine fit.

The Greenpoint fits true to size, similarly to the Cobble Hill or the Park Slope!

In the boatneck, I would size up if you would like to tuck it in, but I prefer the untucked, layered look in this style. In the Park Slope and Cobble Hill, my regular size allows me to tuck or untuck as I please—which I absolutely love!

How does DS sizing run for you? I find the Brighton Boatneck generally runs true to size but is a more fitted silhouette in general. In the Brighton, I would size up one if you are between sizes, or have a larger chest or longer torso. The Cobble Hill definitely runs true to size! I love my normal size here, it is not too fitted but I still get that clean, structured look. The Greenpoint runs true to size but has less length than the Cobble Hill, so it feels more sleek but you get that same comfort and room.

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? I love to pair my DS goods with a crisp pair of white jeans with a fun accessory like a scarf or headband, or over a fun patterned dress. You can never go wrong with a classic pair of denim and flats either! I think the silhouettes are so polished that they elevate any easy look! I refuse to travel without one because they can pull anything together at the last minute.

Any other DS fit tips? If you have a larger chest or broader shoulders, I would size up one, but if you prefer that classic, clean Dudley look, I would go with your regular size!

How do you Dudley? I created our styles along with my sister and Mom based on our desire for comfortable clothing that can be worn anywhere, every day—and they have delivered (and then some). I wear our pieces to work for the brand every day, of course, but I also wear them during my downtime to chase my boys around. And currently I’m expecting and appreciating our pieces even more for their easygoing versatility!

Favorite DS Colors: So hard to choose but usually gravitate to Green, Cobalt and Marigold

Desert Island Dudley: The Brighton Boatneck

What size do you typically wear in DS? I usually wear a medium in both the Park Slope and Cobble Hill Turtlenecks. This allows me to layer a button down under my Park Slope to dress it up a little more for meetings. The Cobble Hill in medium is a comfortable and relaxed fit, so I can wear it with leggings to drop the kids off at school or with skinny jeans to last me throughout the day.

Early in my pregnancy I found that my typical size was pretty forgiving, especially in looser fits like our ponchos and dresses. In the later months, however, I do size up in our turtlenecks and the Prospect Pullover. I found they are wearable right up until the last weeks of pregnancy—and then much appreciated in that “fourth trimester” after the baby arrives, when sleepless nights and unpredictable days mean comfort is key!

How does DS sizing run for you? Our Cobble Hill and Park Slope turtlenecks are typically true to size, but for later-month maternity—or even if you’re just looking for a roomier fit—I recommend sizing up and sticking with the Cobble Hill (later in pregnancy, the bump outgrows the shorter Park Slope).

What’s your favorite thing to pair DS styles with? For me, the easiest mom/expecting mom uniform in the colder months is a Cobble Hill Turtleneck with leggings while at home, or a comfortable pair of maternity skinny jeans while out and about.

Any other DS fit tips? For expecting moms looking at our pieces, I would say consider the full span of your pregnancy. If you’re heading into cooler months later in your pregnancy, you may want to stock up early in one size up so you have your choice of fleece fabrics and colors!

Don’t forget the post labor “fourth trimester” when you’ll want to live in your DS Fleece while snuggling with your newborn.
